The employees of Southern Trust Mortgage raise an incredible $20,000 for Hurricane Katrina relief.
(PRWEB) November 22, 2005 -- As the tragedy unfolded in the hurricane struck region of the gulf 2 months ago, many people throughout the world emptied their pockets to assist in the relief effort. The employees of Southern Trust Mortgage were no exception. Jerry Flowers, President and CEO of the company, pledged to personally match donations made by the employees and their families. Spurred by this offer, the employees of Southern Trust have managed to raise an incredible $20,000 for this cause. Because of this generosity, they have been able to assist four families thus far with monetary help, item donations and transportation. In one instance, employees in the Norfolk, VA branch collected enough food, clothing, blankets and other necessities to fill a van which was driven to New Orleans to help a hard hit family that had been sheltered by an old factory for days.
Perhaps the most touching story thus far has been that of a family with eight children who were desperately seeking transportation to Manassas, VA to claim a housing voucher from FEMA. Southern Trust Mortgage took this opportunity to help them and provided them with airfare and car service for this trip. Thanks to their assistance, this family was able to relocate from a devastated area in Louisiana to a townhouse in Virginia. A representative from Southern Trust, had a chance to speak with the grandmother of the eight children and said, "She was extremely grateful, they all were. She broke down in tears…talking about how wonderful everyone has been. The support they have been receiving from local organizations is phenomenal, and without the money we were able to provide them with, they never would have made it to Virginia to claim their housing voucher."
Southern Trust Mortgage found out about this family’s plight via the website, Homes for Katrina (www.homesforkatrina.org). Through this website, over 2600 individuals have offered their homes, apartment buildings, or hotels and over 90 churches/organizations have registered to help. There are many other people who still need assistance, and Southern Trust remains registered on the website to provide relief where needed.
